P-Skive

What is P-Skive?

P-Skive, or parkeringsskive in Danish, is a parking disc that indicates the time a vehicle is parked in designated areas. It is crucial for expats in Denmark to understand how to use this device, as it helps avoid parking fines in regulated zones.

How does it work?

The P-Skive is set to the nearest quarter-hour after parking begins. For example, if you park at 13:03, you would set the P-Skive to 13:15. There are mechanical versions that require manual adjustment and electronic versions that automatically set the time when the vehicle is parked.

Failure to use a P-Skive—or setting the wrong time—can result in a parking fine.

Common rules or requirements

  • Must be displayed visibly on the dashboard.
  • Set to the correct time to avoid fines.

Parking Fines in Denmark

Parking fines in Denmark are expensive, often ranging from DKK 510 to over DKK 1,000 depending on the violation and location. Fines are issued for:

  • Not using a P-Skive in a regulated zone

  • Overstaying the permitted time

  • Incorrect placement or setting of the disc

Municipal parking inspectors are active, especially in cities like Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense, so accurate P-Skive use is essential.

Example

You arrive in Frederiksberg and park in a 2-hour time-limited spot. You set your electronic P-Skive to display the correct arrival time. When the inspector checks, they see your disc is set properly, and you avoid a fine.

Quick Tips for Expats

  • Always check street signs for parking time limits before leaving your car.

  • Invest in an electronic P-Skive—they’re widely available and easy to use.

  • Parking fines are costly, so don’t take the risk of skipping or misusing your disc.

  • For more on vehicle-related rules, check local municipal websites or ask your housing provider.
