Klassefest

What is Klassefest?

In Danish culture, a Klassefest (literally “class party”) is a social gathering organized among classmates. It can take place during the school year—especially in older grades—or later in life as a class reunion. The purpose is to reflect on shared experiences, reconnect, and celebrate both old memories and new life milestones.

These events are popular at all school levels and are also common in gymnasiums (upper secondary schools) and folkeskole reunions.

How does it work?

A typical Klassefest in Denmark involves:

  • A few classmates forming a planning group
  • Selecting a venue, such as a rented hall, restaurant, or even a school classroom
  • Sharing invitations via Facebook, Messenger, or alumni networks
  • Organizing entertainment like music, games, or speeches
  • Including food and drinks, often with everyone contributing or chipping in

Events are generally informal, relaxed, and focused on rekindling friendships and celebrating shared roots.

Example

Imagine a group of classmates from a Copenhagen gymnasium organizing a reunion 15 years after graduation. They rent a space, share old photos, eat dinner together, and catch up on life. It’s casual, warm, and very Danish—focused more on shared experience than formal ceremony.
