Forsikring

Forsikring is the Danish term for insurance, and it plays an important role in protecting individuals from financial loss due to accidents, theft, or damage. While some insurance types are optional, others are highly recommended or required depending on your housing, employment, or residency status.

What is Forsikring?

In Denmark, individuals typically hold various types of insurance depending on their living situation. The most common forms include:

  • Indboforsikring (household contents insurance)
  • Ansvarsforsikring (personal liability insurance, usually part of the household insurance)
  • Rejseforsikring (travel insurance)
  • Bilforsikring (car insurance)
  • Ulykkesforsikring (accident insurance)
  • Sundhedsforsikring (private health insurance)

Some types, such as car liability insurance, are legally required. Others, like household insurance, are optional but strongly advised—especially for renters.

Why is insurance important as a tenant?

Even though landlords typically carry insurance on the property itself, tenants are still responsible for damage caused by their own fault or negligence, or that of guests, agents, or household members.

That’s why it’s strongly recommended that you take out a household insurance policy (indboforsikring), which usually includes:

  • Theft, fire, break-in, and vandalism
  • Damage to your private belongings
  • Personal liability if you accidentally cause damage to others or their property

This coverage ensures you’re not financially exposed in case of accidents in your home or elsewhere.

Common Insurance Types in Denmark

Type Description
Indboforsikring Covers personal belongings and liability in your home
Ansvarsforsikring Personal liability insurance, often bundled with indbo
Rejseforsikring Travel insurance for medical issues, delays, or cancellations
Bilforsikring Required car insurance (third-party and optional full coverage)
Ulykkesforsikring Covers disability or injury due to accidents
Sundhedsforsikring Optional private health insurance for faster access to care

Example

Imagine you accidentally leave a candle burning and cause smoke damage to your rental apartment. While the landlord’s insurance may cover structural repairs, you would be liable for damage caused by your own actions—and without household insurance, you would pay out of pocket.

Likewise, if your guest spills red wine on your neighbor’s expensive rug, your personal liability insurance could cover the cost.

Quick Tips for Expats

  • Take out household insurance (indboforsikring) as soon as you move into a rental property—it’s not included with your lease.
  • Always read the terms and check what’s covered under liability and personal belongings.
  • Most Danish insurers offer packages for renters—compare providers or ask locals for recommendations.

If you’re unsure which type of insurance you need, consult with an insurance advisor or housing support service.
