Dagpleje
What is Dagpleje?
In a dagpleje setting, one childminder usually looks after 3 to 5 children in their home. These smaller groups allow for close relationships and a quiet, familiar daily rhythm.
The municipality supervises the service to ensure quality and safety. Some municipalities also offer gæste-dagpleje (backup care) in case the usual childminder is ill or unavailable.
Key features include:
- Home-like setting with fewer children than a vuggestue
- Daily routines include meals, naps, play, and walks
- Regular visits from a municipal supervisor to ensure standards
- Social activities and joint play with other local dagpleje groups
Why choose Dagpleje?
Many parents value the personal atmosphere and consistent caregiver that dagpleje offers. It’s often seen as a gentler transition from home to childcare, especially for younger children.
However, because each childminder only hosts a few children, spots can be limited. Early registration is recommended.
Dagpleje vs. Vuggestue
Feature | Dagpleje | Vuggestue |
Group size | 3–5 children | Larger groups, often 10+ children |
Setting | Childminder’s private home | Institutional daycare facility |
Staff | One certified childminder | Team of pedagogues and assistants |
Atmosphere | Home-like, quieter | More structured and social |
Example
Imagine you’re new to Denmark with a 10-month-old child. You prefer a calm setting and one primary caregiver. You apply for dagpleje through your local municipality and your child is placed with a childminder who looks after three other toddlers in her home. Over time, your child develops a close bond with the caregiver and a sense of routine that makes the transition to børnehave smoother later on.
Quick Tips for Expats
- Apply early—spaces are limited due to small group sizes.
- Your municipality (kommune) handles registration and placements.
- If your childminder is ill, ask about gæste-dagpleje or alternative options.
- Don’t hesitate to ask for a meeting with the childminder before accepting a placement.
- Even though it’s home-based, dagpleje follows educational guidelines and is professionally supervised.
