CPR Number
A CPR number (short for Det Centrale Personregister, or Central Person Register) is a unique 10-digit identification number assigned to everyone who is registered as a resident in Denmark. It functions much like a Social Security Number in other countries and is essential for accessing most public services.
The number follows the format DDMMYY-XXXX, indicating your birth date and a unique sequence.
Why is a CPR number important?
Having a CPR number is crucial for living and working in Denmark. It is required for:
-
Visiting a doctor or hospital
-
Opening a bank account
-
Signing a rental contract
-
Receiving your NemID/MitID and digital post
-
Paying taxes and receiving your salary
-
Enrolling children in school or daycare
-
Registering for a mobile phone subscription
In short, it’s the key to participating in Danish society.
Who can get a CPR number?
You are eligible to receive a CPR number if you are:
-
An EU/EEA or Swiss citizen staying in Denmark for more than 3 months
-
A non-EU citizen with a valid residence permit
-
A student or worker with a documented stay of more than 3 months (6 months for job seekers)
-
A family member of someone who meets the criteria above
How do you get a CPR number?
To obtain a CPR number, you must register your address with the Folkeregisteret (National Registration Office) in the local municipality (kommune). This process is called moving into Denmark (bopælsregistrering).
You typically need:
-
A valid residence permit or proof of right to reside
-
A rental contract or housing confirmation
-
A valid ID/passport
-
A completed registration form (varies by kommune)
After registration, your CPR number will be issued, and you’ll receive your yellow health insurance card (sundhedskort), which also acts as proof of your CPR number.
What does the CPR number unlock?
Once you have a CPR number, you can register for:
-
NemID / MitID: Secure login for digital services
-
Digital Post: Official communication from public authorities
-
Borger.dk / e-Boks: Access to tax information, medical records, etc.
-
Sundhed.dk: Book doctor appointments and see test results
-
Skat.dk: Your personal tax portal
Fun fact: Gender and the last digit
The last digit of the CPR number indicates your gender—even numbers for females, odd numbers for males.
