Årsopgørelse

What is Årsopgørelse?

Årsopgørelse is the annual tax statement issued by the Danish tax authorities, Skattestyrelsen. It provides a comprehensive summary of an individual’s income, deductions, and taxes paid over the previous calendar year. This document is essential for understanding your tax obligations and potential refunds or debts.

How does it work?

Component Description
Total Income Earned Includes all sources of income such as salary and freelance work.
Eligible Deductions Includes deductions for commuting or work-related expenses.
Total Taxes Paid Reconciles estimated taxes paid with actual tax liability.

It is typically released in March and serves to reconcile the estimated taxes paid throughout the year with the actual tax liability. For example, if you earned a salary and had freelance income, both will be included in your Årsopgørelse.

Common rules or requirements

  • Taxpayers must verify the information on their Årsopgørelse.
  • Corrections can be made until May 1 of the following year.

Example

Imagine you worked as a freelancer and also had a part-time job. Your Årsopgørelse will summarize all your earnings, including any deductions for commuting or work-related expenses. If you find that you overpaid taxes, you may receive a refund, while underpayment will show as a debt.

Quick Tips for Expats

  • Always check your Årsopgørelse for accuracy to avoid overpaying taxes.
  • Be aware of the May 1 deadline for making corrections to your Årsopgørelse.
