Affaldssortering

What is Affaldssortering?

Affaldssortering, or waste sorting, is a daily habit for most households in Denmark—and for good reason. It involves separating waste into categories such as paper, plastic, metal, glass, organic waste, and residual waste.

This practice plays a vital role in reducing landfill use and supporting Denmark’s ambitious recycling goals.

Why does it matter?

Denmark has one of the most advanced waste management systems in the world. Affaldssortering ensures that recyclable materials are reused and that hazardous or non-recyclable waste is handled correctly.

Proper sorting helps:

  • Reduce environmental impact
  • Conserve resources
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Improve efficiency in waste treatment facilities

How does it work?

Each municipality (kommune) provides specific sorting guidelines, bins, and collection schedules. Most homes and apartment buildings will have color-coded bins or containers for:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Plastics and metal
  • Glass
  • Organic waste (mad- og restaffald)
  • General (residual) waste
  • Hazardous or special waste (e.g., batteries, electronics)

In some areas, recycling stations are used instead of curbside collection.

What should expats know?

If you’re new to Denmark, waste sorting may seem confusing at first—but it quickly becomes second nature. Here are a few tips:

  • Read the instructions on the bin or the kommune’s website (many offer English versions)
  • Clean containers before disposal (especially for plastic and glass)
  • Don’t mix materials—improper sorting can lead to entire batches being discarded
  • Return bottles and cans with a “pant” symbol to reverse vending machines for a deposit refund
