SU

What is SU?

SU is a public financial support system designed to help students cover living expenses while pursuing an education in Denmark. It is available to Danish citizens and eligible foreign nationals who meet specific criteria. SU consists of two parts:

  • Grants: Non-repayable monthly payments

  • Loans: Optional, low-interest government loans

How Does It Work?

Once you’re accepted into a SU-approved education programme, you can apply for SU via www.su.dk. If approved, you will receive a fixed monthly grant. You may also apply for an SU loan if additional support is needed.

Payment amounts and eligibility are influenced by:

  • Your age

  • Whether you live with your parents or independently

  • Your income

  • Your citizenship or residence status

Common Rules or Requirements

  • You must be at least 18 years old

  • You must be enrolled in a Danish-approved full-time education

  • EU/EEA/Swiss citizens may be eligible if they work at least 10–12 hours per week in Denmark

  • Non-EU/EEA students may be eligible under special circumstances (e.g. if they have long-term residency or refugee status)

  • You must not exceed the annual income limit (fribeløb) to maintain eligibility

Example

You are a 21-year-old EU citizen studying at the University of Copenhagen. You also work 12 hours a week at a café. You apply for SU and are approved because your work hours and education programme meet the requirements. You receive a monthly grant and can also apply for a loan if needed.
