Borgerservice

What is Borgerservice?

Borgerservice, also known as Citizen Service, is a vital component of Denmark’s public service system. It provides residents with access to a wide range of municipal services through both physical centers and a comprehensive digital platform called Borger.dk. The aim is to streamline interactions between citizens and the public sector, ensuring that essential services are accessible and user-friendly.

This is also where you get your CPR number, which is essential for accessing healthcare, opening a bank account, and more in Denmark.
You can register for a CPR number once you have a place to live for at least one month.

Expats living in the Copenhagen area can also register at International House Copenhagen, which offers support in English.

How does it work?

Borgerservice operates through two main channels: physical service centers located in municipalities and the online portal Borger.dk. At these centers, residents can receive assistance with various services, such as applying for social benefits, obtaining identity documents, and accessing health services. The digital platform offers around 2,000 self-service solutions, allowing citizens to manage their public service needs from home.

Common rules or requirements

Requirement Description
Identification Residents must provide identification when accessing services at physical centers.
Digital ID To use the online portal, citizens need a digital ID (NemID or MitID) for secure access.

Example

Imagine you’ve just moved to Denmark and need to apply for a health insurance card (sundhedskort). You’ll first need to book an appointment online before visiting your local Borgerservice center. Alternatively, you can handle parts of the process through Borger.dk if you already have a digital ID (MitID).

This system ensures efficient service and helps newcomers manage key registrations like CPR and health coverage.

Familiarize yourself with the Borger.dk portal to manage your services online.
Visit a physical Borgerservice center for personalized assistance, especially if you are new to the system.
